The 2010 Independent Lens Audience Award winner and hailed by the New York Times as "Smart, sincere and affecting", MINE is a feature-length documentary about the essential bond between humans and animals, set against the backdrop of one of the worst disasters in modern U.S. history, Hurricane Katrina. This gripping, character-driven story is told from the perspective of original guardians, rescuers, and adoptive parents of "Katrina pets". These individuals are all connected by two things, the tragic aftermath of Katrina and their love of animals. The film is a meditation on human nature as well as animal nature. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, volunteers heroically rescued thousands of pets stranded in the destruction of New Orleans. But the unprecedented chaos of the storm’s aftermath left questions about whether the pets were abandoned or simply lost. As owners desperately searched for their furry family members, well-meaning volunteers adopted the displaced animals, sparking several fraught custody battles between original owners and adopters who had established bonds with their new pets. MINE examines several of these angst-ridden cases with precision and compassion. View the film's preview trailer here: |
